#127 Midsommar
Directed by Ari Aster
Year 2019
“Do you feel held by him? Does he feel like home to you?”
If you describe the movie, very little happens and it sounds kind of stupid. College kids take a lot of drugs and end up among people they don’t understand. However, there is a lot going on here, from Dani’s grief to Christian’s inability to realize what a waste he is. Josh attempting to study the culture while missing everything going on around him. I return to this more than any other Ari Aster film. He has a rare gift for drawing out a moment to great effect, his use of sound and score are like no other. Also, his violence is grotesque, and I don’t know if he’s doing that deliberately. Another reason to return to Midsommar is Florence Pugh. I’ve now seen the other major films of her brief career and this remains my favorite. I love the fragility she brings to Dani, often on the verge of crying, apologizing for things she doesn’t need to be sorry about. Jack Reynor and her do an amazing job portraying a couple that are both aware they should’ve broken up long ago.
