Throwing no shade because I do like The Monster Squad, but I’m surprised to see it up this high and I was curious to learn why. Turns out this film is more broadly appealing than I was aware of. It’s popularity comes from being a true (semi-)modern day monster mash-up, with most of the classic Universal monsters. The tribute extends to people who grew up on Hammer Horror, acting like a Hot Fuzz style affectionate tribute to those films. This is also a great gateway film for introducing the younger generation to these characters.
There’s the Ace in the deck of screenwriter Shane Black, who helped out his friend while also writing Lethal Weapon. Black’s signature humor can be noticed most in the film’s climax, where all the kids get to payoff their personalities while fighting the monsters. Finally, there’s the most famous line, a moment of shock involving defending yourself against a Wolfman. It’s a line that spun off its own merchandise, everything from tasteful tee shirts to tasteless keychains.
