Moulin Rouge
Directed by Baz Luhrmann
Year 2001
Moulin Rouge is overstuffed with the overedited chaos of images and noise that would give Michael Bay a headache. Yet, it matches the grand romantic tone of the world perfectly. We can all find moments where it looks like the film is unsure how to put the scene together, and over half of it where the editing is groundbreaking and alive. There’s an exuberance to this film unmatched by any other, and I still get swept up by the sheer energy of this tornado.
The first night at the Moulin Rouge is a frenetic fever dream, perfectly constructed with little breaks and key changes. My favorite moment is during the dance remix of the Can-Can, when the dancers all hit the ground in a split – the sound of the dresses hitting the floor like parachutes opening – and Ewan Mcgregor unexpectedly sings out, “Cause it’s good for your mind.”
