#283 Wes Craven’s New Nightmare

Directed by Wes Craven

Year 1994

Wes Craven introduced Freddy Krueger and after the 3rd film, let the franchise run its course and watched its knife-fingered villain become a pop culture icon. Once New Line squeezed the sponge dry, Craven came back with a meta-fresh idea that would return Krueger to his dark roots. This story would take place in the “real world” with Craven playing himself along with Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy in the first film. They would take on the real Freddy Krueger, who had a new darker look and attitude. Freddy is targeting the cast and crew involved in the Elm Street franchise because the films worked to contain the evil entity. It’s a bit goofy to describe, but Craven doesn’t put too much emphasis on the layers, opting to have everyone just accept events as a statement of fact. Besides, we get to enjoy a Freddy still played by Robert Englund – who also plays himself – but one that has more of a dangerous edge and a comfortable budget the first films couldn’t play with.
