It says a lot that Jordan Peele made three features between 2017 and 2022 – all Horror/Thrillers – and all three have now been listed. Like the conclusion of a trilogy, Nope has the biggest canvas. Big enough to contain two stories, and the monkey story mostly only fits in thematically. This also shows Peele moving beyond Horror into a healthy dose of Spielberg-ian wonder. It’s also kind of a Western, with Daniel Kaluuya doing a really fine Gary Cooper. Like with Us, the script has a few too many ideas, but Peele storytelling skills have never shown more confidence. The flaws and nitpicks hardly matter in the face of such artistry. I was enthralled, I was engaged, this is why I love cinema.
