#130 Nosferatu the Vampire
Directed by Werner Herzog
Year 1979
Remake of the 1922 Silent Masterpiece (#38) and remade again in 2024 (about 400 titles away), this version is slower and less stylish, but it still has a lot of memorable imagery and a choking feeling of impending doom. Herzog uses natural landscapes to suggest the supernatural darkness that falls over the land. All three versions cast wildly eccentric actors as The Count, and it’s hard to get more eccentric than Klaus Kinski. This version also features the greatest version of Lucy Harker, played by Isabelle Adjani, with a dark-eyed sexuality that builds on silent film acting while pre-dating the modern version having Lucy make the ultimate decision on how to save everyone. The final shot is superb.
