#135 Oldboy
Directed by Park Chan-wook
Year 2003
One of the All-Time Great revenge plots, a businessman is kidnapped and held prisoner for 15 Years before being mysteriously released. He spends the next week solving the mystery of why this happened while readjusting to society and brutally destroying anyone who gets in his way. However, this is only the surface revenge story. The real crime is something the man can’t remember while the revenge is a punishment he will never be able to forget.
Emotionally charged, coldly manipulative and opening with a long stretch of disorientating style as the man fights his situation, gives in a goes more than a little insane. Choi Min-sik juggles this unique character’s sudden freedom, need for revenge and determination to solve a puzzling quest. It’s a masterclass that I can only imagine young Gary Oldman being able to pull off. A Lee Marvin tough guy suffering the spectacular implosion of a broken man.
