#352 The Orphanage
Directed by J.A. Bayona
Year 2007
An orphanage is a great, classic setting for a ghost story. What makes this film different is the way it considers what would create a ghost, and what unfinished business would cause it to remain trapped in our world. The tone has a lot in common with The Devil’s Backbone, but this is a very different story and the two would make a great double feature. The story here is ultimately too sentimental to work in harmony with the Horror, but these are not simple scares. At its best, the film creates sequences that draw out the dread and maintain the tension for a longer amount of time than we’re used to.
