#428 Resident Evil

Directed by Zach Cregger

Year 2026

I was deflated when I learned Zach Cregger’s entire career to this point came after Jordan Peele’s last film. The order is different, but both filmmakers have achieved a similar level of box office and critical success. Cregger hasn’t had the cultural impact of Get Out, but Weapons comes pretty close as a film to talk about. The best comment about this Zach Cregger film comes from the director himself, who said he wanted to hit the gas and not let up for 90 minutes. I’d say mission accomplished. This is a ride as much as a film. I’m thrilled by the pace, the way it skirts right up to being a comedy of errors, but brings the scares and the scary every time it aims to. It maybe loses a bit of tension with the effects heavy final section, but this is going to be great for rewatches.
