#29 Ringu
Directed by Hideo Nakata
Year 1998
Ringu is the Japanese Horror film that broke through in the U.S. as a cult film to seek out. It kicked off the J-Horror wave, including its most famous and often parodied image of a girl with long black hair covering her face. The Ring franchise included a number of direct sequels and remakes, including an American Trilogy, the first of which is very good and will come up in this project. There’s even a parody where the demon from Ringu fights the demon from Ju-On (another franchise destined to come up.)
The 1998 original is justifiably famous for its creepy atmosphere and gripping mystery that leads to a bizarre and satisfying conclusion. The cursed video tape and seven-day countdown is one of those “Why didn’t I think of this?” type plots. The supernatural story is set up in a realistic way and there’s a simple, almost humble level of suspense throughout.
