Safe
Directed by Todd Haynes
Year 1995
This is a tricky one to talk about because the film is both vague and overly specific. Julianne Moore in an astonishing performance, plays Carol White, who develops a sensitivity to the chemicals that live around us every day. Because there’s no escaping them, she is highly prone to physical ailments including panic attacks. Her friends and family do not understand what is happening and they (and we) wonder if she’s looking for attention or mental help.
The trick of the film is that we observe and we have opinions, but we are sympathetic to Carol because of the performance by Moore and because Haynes does his best to put us inside her head. This is done through a sterility to the Sets by Anthony Stabley, a pristine approach to the Costumes by Nancy Steiner (Promising Young Woman) and a heightened Sound Mix by Neil Danziger (Poker Face).
Also want to mention, the final scene is one of my All Time favorites.
