This year’s surprise success of Obsession and its young director, Curry Barker, get me thinking about Steven Soderbergh, who also made his first feature when he was 25-years old. First written on a yellow legal pad in eight days, though he’d been thinking about the story for over a year, Soderbergh’s script was strong enough to attract James Spader and Andie MacDowell, which helped raise the $1.2 million budget. The next Summer, the film was chosen to play at Cannes as part of the Directors’ Fortnight, Cannes’ section for new filmmakers. When another film dropped out of the main competition, Sex, Lies and Videotape moved in. When it won the Palme D’Or, it made Soderbergh the youngest winner of that prize.
