My love for Brian De Palma has dropped sharply as I grew older, but he has a robust body of work and his name keeps coming up on both lists. This is his 4th appearance here, and a film that truly separates his fans from viewers who are curious. Sisters looks like low-budget exploitation, with performances and a script to match. However, it’s very creepy and visually inventive. So, even if it’s not satisfying and borrows liberally from Hitchcock, there’s the unease and underlying tension sustained only in the very best Horror movies. Because it’s made by a filmmaker with such florid visual style, the grindhouse exploitation is elevated to where you believe the ending will do something not just graphically violent but unforgettable.
