I prefer Pedro Almodóvar when he’s being lurid first and the grander themes come in from behind. This was designed from the surface down. The bold decor and wild choices guide you through a story that is even bolder and more wild. I knew there was a surprise, and it seemed obvious at first, but that wasn’t it. No sir. This baby is out there. A deeply perverse version of Eyes Without a Face that wants you to gaze at Elena Anaya, the mysterious patient of Antonio Banderas, a plastic surgeon with a breakthrough synthetic skin. The story tackles questions of physical attraction and gender politics in fantastical ways, taking the ‘object’ and making it the ‘subject’. A number of shocks and surprises await, and Almodóvar heightens everything just right with his particular approach.
