Directed by Brian Yuzna

Year 1989

After producing Re-Animator, Brian Yuzna made his directing debut, a very blunt body horror satire where the rich are actually aliens who enjoy feasting on the poor. The look is very 1980s and some of the acting is terrible. This doesn’t hinder what’s so memorable about the film. Yuzna discovered a very creative Makeup Effects Artist who goes by Screaming Mad George (Predator, Elm Street 3 & 4). Together they present an alien ritual where the elite strip down and physically mutate their bodies to meld with each other into one giant, fleshy mass. While doing this, they gain power by feasting on the nutrients of poor victims and absorbing their bodies too. The film somehow combines The Substance, Eyes Wide Shut and Scooby Doo storytelling. The finale is a masterpiece of prosthetic effects, you can’t believe what you’re seeing and you’re grossed out and horrified, but you cannot look away.
