#417 Spellbound
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Year 1945
A perfect example of professionals at the top of their game overcoming weaknesses in the script. It’s not that the script is poorly written, just that the pseudo-Freudian psychology is simplistic nonsense. The rest of the dialogue is sophisticated and witty, driven by the megastar pairing of Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck. Hitchcock is at the helm, with notable assistance from Salvador Dali, who contributed to the unusual dream sequences. It’s a strong ensemble, but the psychological suspense is the star of the show instead of the performances.
