#197 Straw Dogs

Directed by Sam Peckinpah

Year 1971

The After Dark list is the definitive ranked list of Horror/Thrillers, which means it’s going to provoke with titles that might make you uncomfortable. This film is a key reason for expanding beyond just pure Horror films. It’s definitely a Thriller and not Horror, but it deliberately evokes the same questionable bloodlust, excitement and revulsion you get from a Horror film. Few films are soaked in controversial choices like Straw Dogs, because it is a viewing experience that repulses some and looking at the film intellectually, it’s easy to mistake the filmmakers’ intent. Sam Peckinpah takes none of the safe roads when it comes to violence, sexual assault, mental disabilities and small towns with small minds. By refusing to make any moral judgments, the film is as frustrating as it is compelling.
