#63 Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

Directed by Park Chan-wook

Year 2002

An emotionally devastating masterpiece, where the best of intentions have the worst of consequences. A revenge film where the most damage is done to the soul of the living, while the storytelling so steadfastly refuses to take a side it’s unsure who is the “Mr. Vengeance” of the title. You care for everyone involved. When things get bad and the dominos fall… man, this film does not flinch. This is not torture porn, but a tough, realistic look at the very nature and consequence of revenge. Not the cheery fun of Kill Bill, but a film that hits a raw nerve and dares you to keep watching.

Anyone curious how deep my knowledge goes, in 2010 a French Canadian film called Seven Days took this idea and went even harder with it. Stripped out all the plot and focused on the father and the criminal. It’s on the list, but we are years away from writing about it. Seven Days is a much more difficult watch, but it stays true to itself and has final lines of dialogue I doubt I will ever forget. Effective, but recommended with caution.
