#93 Tetsuo: The Iron Man

Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto

Year 1989

A combination of David Cronenberg, David Lynch and Sam Raimi, this is the definitive Cyberpunk film. In college, I often put it on to play in the background of parties. Even without sound, the visuals go well with whatever music is in the room and eventually enough people would have to ask, “what the hell is this?” It’s just as interesting to watch intently, a “puzzle film” that runs just over an hour and contains the most creative sequences involving flesh turning into machine. The industrial soundscape you often hear in the background of a David Lynch film is what’s happening on screen here. The body breaks down as it must so that it can evolve into something frighteningly new.
