#43 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Directed by Robert Wiene

Year 1920

Not the earliest Horror/Thriller I’ve seen – I have 11 features from the 1910s – but the earliest Horror Masterpiece and one of the most influential films ever. It’s the title that best defines German Expressionist cinema, where the mental state of the characters are expressed through the bizarre design of the sets they walk through. The backgrounds are obviously painted. Costumes, Props and Makeup are exaggerated and everything is at odd, slanted angles because we are watching a story told by a madman. It creates Psychological Horror, rather than using physical shocks.
