#132 The Changeling

Directed by Peter Medak

Year 1980

Haunted House movies usually contain large ensembles. Everyone has that one thing they fear most, and the house goes about poking at the weaknesses of its inhabitants. The Changeling does away with all that, focusing on one person (George C. Scott) trying to solve the mystery presented by the house. I had to check the credits to remember who else is even in the movie. It’s incredibly restrained work, lots of quiet broken by an occasional weird image or unnatural noise. Then it goes quiet again, which sets the viewer on edge. Meanwhile, like with Exorcist III, Scott is given an interesting mystery to solve, clues that could lead to the house finally resting in peace.
