A little peek behind the curtain for anyone who never read the FAQ. This list isn’t entirely my own. It uses collected data from a variety of sources, the same data that created They Shoot Zombies Don’t They. The difference being I then add my Ratings and Rankings to the master list, creating a new list of the Best that favors my opinion. The point being, this isn’t my favorite version of Shirley Jackson’s story. (Don’t worry, it’s not the 1999 remake either. That one currently sits at #3223.) My preferred version is Mike Flanagan’s 2018 Netflix miniseries, The Haunting of Hill House, and since the list includes miniseries, I will be writing about it later this year.
Currently, Robert Wise’s 1963 is still considered the preferred version, and it’s one of the classiest productions in all of the After Dark project. A supernatural thriller that both captures the suggestive chills of 1940s Horror and the psychological complexity of a modern Haunted House movie. Most of the events can be explained, but you have to have your cool wits about you to push against the superstitious curse of this lavish house. If you want to know how little artistic regard the Horror genre has been given throughout history, know that this received no major Awards consideration, even though the Art Direction, Sound and Cinematography is easily among the best of 1960s cinema.
