#434 The Host

Directed by Bong Joon Ho

Year 2006

A giant monster movie, but because it’s from the director of Parasite, there’s no good way to actually describe the film except to say it’s not what you think. It’s really not even a pure monster movie because the movie focuses a little more on the dysfunctional family that ends up at the center of the chaos. Like other Bong films, especially Okja and Mickey 17, this is just as much of a political satire and there’s a lot more humor – wacky humor – than viewers may think should be in a monster movie.

Still, the creature action is the highlight, especially the initial introductory rampage. That’s partly because the effects are top notch, making the monster completely believable without needing to hide it with night and rain. The film is at its comic best when highlighting mass panic and bad decisions made under incredible pressure.
