An early case where a film’s reputation is somewhat greater than my personal opinion. A modern Horror film done in an old-fashioned style, in the manner of classy and classic Haunted House movies like The Innocents and The Haunting. There are a number of solid scare scenes, and the atmosphere is rich with supernatural dread. The film has a steady pace to increase suspense by drawing the viewer into its mystery, one with a conclusion that even I think is among the film’s best qualities. My problem with the film is that I figured out that conclusion rather early (not something I often do), and I thought Kidman’s performance was all bug-eyed while her voice alternates between whispers and shrieks.
