The Prestige
Directed by Christopher Nolan
Year 2006
Our tagline here is Great Movies Are Assembled by Crew, and this is a perfect example. It is yet another Chris Nolan film, but the key step in his evolution. Unlike the shaky remake of Insomnia, which met with mixed results, The Prestige has gone on to become the secret masterpiece. It still has all the quirks and unanswered questions Nolan critics like to bring up, but it also shows Nolan giving room for his collaborators to shine.
This was the 2nd Oscar nomination for Director of Photography Wall Pfister, who would go on to win for Inception. It’s also the first Oscar nomination for Production Designer Nathan Crowley. Crowley would earn 5 nominations for Nolan films and finally win with 2024’s Wicked. The adaptation would be Chris’ first official team-up with his brother Jonathan, and though this is early Nolan he already has the pull to stack the cast with big, familiar names and a handful of unusual choices, like Ricky Jay, Andy Serkis and David Bowie. This is the best work by Costume Designer Joan Bergin, Camera Operator Craig Fikse is now a D.P., and the film looks amazing and expensive despite a reported 40 million dollar budget.
