#116 The Ring

Directed by Gore Verbinski

Year 2002

I’m not surprised that Ringu (#29) places higher on this list. You have to give credit to the original for the core concept and the most memorable elements. Director Gore Verbinski and his team expanded the visual feeling of impending doom to blanket the entire movie in silver gray, and the dread created by being given one week to live is established right at the beginning and never lets up. The Ring showed that Japanese Horror could work in an American setting, though it’s not as easy to do as this film makes it look. (The next Ring film from any country is over 1500 places away.) This remake also has one of the greatest scares of all time, with a slight tweak to the climax so that even if you’ve seen the original you’ll be startled by what happens.
