The Michael Bay style is easily recognizable, and having worked on one of his Transformers films I’ve seen what his set is like when nobody is questioning his decisions. I would be curious to compare that to The Rock, when his hyper-editing style was constantly viewed with skepticism. The famous story is how Sean Connery was ready to have him fired until Bay showed Connery a completed sequence. After that, Connery became one of his biggest defenders against the Disney executives.
At the time, the marketing focused on Nicolas Cage, fresh off his Oscar win and moving into the Hollywood blockbuster. Now it’s seen as that early moment when just the right amount of Michael Bay style could elevate an action film into something better. The same plot could be the setting for a parody of 90s action movies, but the cast is incredible and vast, and the sloppy editing and improv comedy look great compared to what the studios and Michael Bay are doing now.
