#1 The Exorcist

Directed by William Friedkin

Year 1973

I’ve seen over 3000 Horror/Thrillers and putting aside personal opinion, the Top 10 are hard to argue. They’re the titles you know must be conquered at some point if you’re even curious about the genre. I decided to acknowledge the Hall of Fame rather than lose all credibility up front by attempting to argue against them or push in a personal favorite. All of these films I like. Four of them would be in my personal Top 10.

The Exorcist is the perfect place to start, a Horror film people feel they need to work up to. You enter it hyped with dread and are immediately knocked off balance if you think you know what you’re in for. The archeological prologue is like a different movie, and I know many who even on a rewatch don’t remember it. (Some think they’re watching an extended cut.)

It’s a surprisingly talky film, playing against its reputation for visual and sonic bombast. The unforgettable set-pieces remain shocking, sometimes gross and often terrifying. The feeling you’re watching something forbidden, something you thought would never be allowed within the safety of a big-budget studio film is heightened because this is happening to a pre-teen girl.
