I have a conflicted relationship with this movie. The twist on Hillbillies in the Woods is a one-joke idea stretched to a joke-and-a-half because of the performances by Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine. The rest of writer/director Eli Craig’s career is evidence that I’m right about this film. He sets up most gags until what’s about to happen becomes predictable, and he hadn’t learned the balance between bloody funny and just bloody.
I thought of the performances by the college kids as forgettable, but that’s overlooking Jesse Moss, who is terrible as the leader of the group. However, I did enjoy the film more on a 2nd viewing because of the relationship between Dale and Allison (30 Rock’s Katrina Bowden). They’re the secret sweetener that gives the film a little more than murders and misunderstanding.
