#409 Under the Skin

Directed by Jonathan Glazer

Year 2013

Horror comes in so many flavors. This one is close to Mulholland Drive, a patient, surreal odyssey where the audio is just as disturbing as the visuals. The most overt Horror comes from the way Scarlett Johansson’s alien lures men to a stunning destruction, but for many the film’s most disturbing moment involves an abandoned baby at a beach. This alien’s dispassionate view of Earth people equals our own view of animals we slaughter for food, an obvious connection only if you make it yourself. It’s about desire and loneliness and how that goes both ways. This isn’t a movie out to shock and scare you, but it gets its hooks in and buries disturbing seeds that continue to grow over time.
