#47 Videodrome

Directed by David Cronenberg

Year 1983

“Videodrome is one of writer/director David Cronenberg’s most original and provocative works, fusing social commentary with shocking elements of sex and violence. With groundbreaking special effects makeup by Rick Baker, Videodrome has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and mind-bending science fiction films of the 1980s.” – The Criterion Collection

“Long Live the New Flesh.”

As we come to the end of the first 50 films, we end with five titles where their reputation exceeds my personal opinion of them. #51 will start another run with titles from the very top of my personal list and that will complete the Top 100. The argument for Videodrome’s inclusion so high up the list is succinctly made by The Criterion Collection. If you are okay with logic being pushed aside for interesting ideas, this is a film for you because those ideas are tucked into some of the most original body horror imagery – merging organic with technology – presented with top-tier practical effects craft. A big swing of a film about the hypnotic power of television and its ability to distort reality and turn the mind into mush by offering base pleasures.
