#431 Violated Angels
Directed by Kōji Wakamatsu
Year 1967
Based on the 1966 true crime mass murder by Richard Speck, a young man who broke into a nurses’ home in Chicago, mutilating and killing several of the women, The film is a precise, sad examination of masculine sexual consciousness. In less than an hour, director Kōji Wakamatsu throws down an art house challenge to the entire genre. A plot as simple as Angst. (Disturbed young man kills women in a house.) This isn’t about watching women get killed, their sexuality is the film’s confrontational point and their most effective defense against this attacker. Manages to fill the running time with nudity and sadistic violence without coming off like an exploitation picture. A lesson to all other exploitation films.
