Boris Karloff plays a man framed by gangsters for murder. After he is executed, a doctor brings him back. Now that he is one of the undead and unkillable, Karloff takes his revenge. Directed for Warner Bros. by the legendary Michael Curtiz (Casablanca), featuring Edmund Gwenn (Santa in Miracle on 34th Street) as the brilliant scientist and a supporting cast of faces familiar from any number of 1930s Warner Bros. gangster films. The film is fun and classy, though maybe that’s not the best tone for a film you sell as “Undead Karloff destroys the underworld.” There’s another film coming up later called The Man They Could Not Hang, which also stars Karloff in a similar role. It doesn’t have the supporting cast and is not as well-known, but it’s more fun. (Think of Saw where Karloff plays Jigsaw.)
