WarGames
Directed by John Badham
Year 1983
One of my earliest cinematic inspirations, with two very appealing teenage leads in a fast-paced thriller that takes video game language and gives it grown-up, real life consequences. Holds up wonderfully, with the moral question about putting our faith in machines that’s still debated today. (This has outlived the filmmakers actual intention which is demonstrate how a nuclear war is unwinnable.)
The limited technology is part of the fun and the awesome NORAD command center Set is still the one I judge all similar rooms against, whether I go back to 1964’s Fail Safe or something more recent, like A House of Dynamite. The Production Designer is Angelo P. Graham, who worked under Dean Tavoularis on Apocalypse Now and The Godfather Part II.
