#289 Séance on a Wet Afternoon

Directed by Bryan Forbes

Year 1964

A British housewife (Oscar nominated Kim Stanley) pretending to be psychic, hatches a terrible plan to gain publicity. Her unemployed husband (Richard Attenborough) will kidnap a child and she will conduct a séance with the police to help locate the kid. Though the story has been retold a couple of times, this remains a largely unknown gem to be discovered. Written and Directed by Bryan Forbes (The Stepford Wives), the pacing is patient, the atmosphere is dark and moody and the film favors performances over thrills, but the tension is there, always increasing as events spiral out of control and Stanley goes from dominating her husband to needing him in order to maintain sanity.
