Argentinian filmmaker Demián Rugna followed his terrific 2017 film Terrified with this brutal shocker about a demonic presence that spreads like an epidemic through a rural town. Rugna has fresh ideas and a skill for creating horrific images that are hard to shake. The story starts you in late, so you’re trying to get your bearings and get a handle on what’s happening, much like the people in the town. Walking a line between thrilling and depressing, sometimes shocking and occasionally gross with moments of eerie quiet mixed in. The effect keeps you off balance, you don’t feel safe watching. The town is up against incredible odds, but it’s either fight or give in to the hopelessness.
